Abstract
Image processing and analysis methods have recently been developed to perform direct and automatic matching of medical images. These methods have modified the way data fusion is performed and used, moving from a mental to a computer assisted fusion process. This evolution has led to a more accurate, more visual, more quantitative and therefore more objective fusion process. In this paper we present a current review of data fusion methods in medical imaging. We detail the successive steps of a fusion process. We emphasize the role of the clinical context during the development and validation of data fusion methods.
